In a bid to clear encroachments for a housing project, the Municipal Corporation has offered a compensation package to residents occupying land in Harsul. The civic body has proposed Rs 2,000 per month for 18 months to cover rent, along with a house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and a government subsidy.
The 60 slums on the designated land must be vacated for the housing project. The civic body previously attempted to evict the residents but faced resistance due to concerns over homelessness. To address this, the Municipal Commissioner and Administrator G. Shreekant announced the offer on Thursday, assuring alternative arrangements. “Residents can move to rental homes with municipal support while we complete the housing project. Once construction is done, they will receive PMAY apartments and subsidies ranging from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh,” said Shreekant. The administration has identified land in Harsul, Padegaon, Tisgaon, and Sundarwadi for the project. The focus now shifts to whether residents will accept the deal or push back against relocation.
