Aurangabad, Feb 18: Farmers have now rushed to the aid of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL), which is in trouble due to arrears of electricity bills. The Mahakrishi Urja Abhiyan, which provides relief on arrears of electricity bills of agricultural pumps, is getting good response from farmers in the Aurangabad zone, according to an MSEDCL statement.

In the first fortnight of the campaign, 5312 agricultural pump consumers paid the arrears of Rs 3.07 crore. Agricultural pump consumers in Aurangabad and Jalna districts have got an opportunity to get rid of arrears, said chief engineer Bhujang Khandare, appealing them to take advantage of the scheme. A total of 3.55 lakh agricultural pump consumers in Aurangabad zone owe Rs 4461 crore to the MSEDCL. Out of this, a total of Rs 1817.89 crore (meant for de-registration, interest and delayed payment charges) has been waived by MSEDCL. If these agri-consumers pay 50 per cent of the remaining arrears of Rs 2,643.08 crore within a year, the remaining 50 per cent of the arrears, i.e. Rs 1,321.54 crore, will be waived. In effect, farmers are have to pay only 30 per cent of the total arrears.
