Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
In a bizarre incident, a 40-year-old inmate from Paithan Open Jail, who was undergoing life imprisonment (LI), ended his life by jumping into the right canal of Jayakwadi Dam, near Teen Mori Bungalow, this morning. He was undergoing punishment for the last eight months. Meanwhile, the reason for the suicide has not been ascertained, so far.
It may be noted that the prisoner Subhash Ramesh Kengar (32, Keshavnagar Mundhwa, Pune) was awarded lifer on the charge of murder in 2019. He was undertrial from 2016 to 2024. Hence he was behind bars for eight long years. Subhash was shifted from Central Jail - Nashik to Paithan Open Jail on February 16, 2024.
On Wednesday morning (Oct 16), the Soybean harvesting was taking place at the Teen Mori shed in the Paithan area. Hence 12 prisoners were sent for farm work. When the prisoners were counted on reaching the farm, they were 11 in numbers and Subhash was missing. A massive search was launched and after some time the body of Subhash was spotted on the cement railing beneath Teen Mori of South Jayakwadi’s Left Canal.
The Paithan police was alerted. Under the guidance of the police inspector, Sanjay Deshmukh, the assistant police inspector (API) Siddheshwar Gore reached the spot and performed the panchanama. Later on, the body of Subhash Kengar was shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for post mortem.
Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Dr Siddheshwar Bhore and superintendent of Open Jail Kawade also visited and inspected the site.
Meanwhile, all the senior police officials including the PSI Aaudumbar Maske are investigating the case.
