Traders shut down Bajajnagar market in protest against extortion

Fear and frustration gripped traders at the Bajajnagar vegetable market as they shut down business on Saturday, protesting against alleged extortion. Vendors accused local goons of demanding money through threats and intimidation, while the police remained inactive despite repeated complaints.

The closure was a show of unity against extortionists who, emboldened by inaction, have been forcing traders to pay protection money. Women vendors also joined the protest, warning of stronger action if authorities fail to intervene. The market, home to around 500 traders and farmers, came to a standstill as a result.

Shop vandalized in retaliation

Late at night, unidentified miscreants vandalized vendor Shivam Dhanraj Bilghe’s shop, allegedly for continuing business despite threats. The attackers stole livestock, damaged property, and removed CCTV cameras to erase evidence. Bilghe has filed a complaint at Waluj MIDC police station, and constable Kakade is investigating the case. Traders have demanded immediate action, warning that failure to curb extortion could lead to violent retaliation.
