An urge of swimming in stagnant water near the lake at Walmi turned deadly for a teenager who drowned there around 6 pm on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Aniket Ramesh Shahane (Mukundwadi).

According to the police, Aniket is a daily wage worker and had gone for swimming in the lake near Walmi with four friends on Sunday evening. On seeing the huge quantity of water in the lake, they all went down to a nearby pool and jumped into it. Two of them began to drown, so other friends raised an alarm. Nearby security guards rushed to the spot and pulled one out. However, no one was able to save Aniket. Fire brigade personnel Sanjay Kulkarni, Paresh Dudhe, Sujit Kalyankar, Kiran Pagare and Mayur Kumawat reached the spot on getting information of the incident to fish Aniket out of the waters. Satara police station’s API Sunil Karhade also rushed there with the squad. Police rushed Aniket in an unconscious state to the GMCH where doctors declared him dead. A case of accidental death has been registered at Satara police station in the case.
