India’s former assistant coach Abhishek Nayar was spotted at the Kolkata Knight Riders camp in Eden Gardens on Thursday, just days after being reportedly removed from the Indian team’s coaching setup. The sighting has sparked speculation about his return to the IPL franchise where he previously played a key role. Nayar was seen in casual attire while attending KKR’s practice session. Spinner Varun Chakaravarthy shared a photo with him on his Instagram story, tagging Nayar without any caption or emoji. The post quickly went viral, intensifying speculation that Nayar is rejoining the KKR camp in the ongoing IPL 2025 season.

According to media reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has removed Nayar from his role as India’s assistant coach. His removal reportedly followed a series of issues, including India’s poor performance in Test cricket last year and concerns over his approach within the team environment.

Alongside Nayar, India’s fielding coach T. Dilip and strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai were also relieved of their duties. The BCCI cited the completion of their three-year contracts as the reason, in line with its internal policies. However, reports suggest that internal team dynamics and media leaks during the Australia tour also played a role in the shake-up.

A source quoted by PTI revealed that a senior member of the Indian team’s support staff raised concerns about Nayar’s role in the dressing room. The official allegedly claimed that Nayar’s presence was becoming counterproductive. Following this, Sitanshu Kotak was brought in as the new batting coach ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy, effectively replacing Nayar.

Nayar was part of the franchise's IPL 2024 title-winning coaching staff and has been associated with KKR in various capacities since 2018. He also helped run the franchise’s cricket academy.

While there has been no official confirmation from KKR or Nayar regarding a formal return, his presence at the practice session and Varun Chakaravarthy’s post have added fuel to speculation.

Nayar and Varun share a close bond since the spinner joined KKR in 2020. The two have worked closely during previous IPL seasons.

With KKR currently aiming to defend their title in IPL 2025, the timing of Nayar’s possible return could boost the morale and experience within the camp.
