Delhi Capitals have named former Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Faf du Plessis as their vice-captain ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League season. He will serve as deputy to Axar Patel, who was recently appointed captain after the franchise parted ways with Rishabh Pant. The franchise made the announcement through a video on Instagram featuring du Plessis himself. The post read, "Pick up your phones, it’s your vice-captain calling 💙❤️."
Du Plessis was released by RCB after the IPL 2024 season despite delivering strong performances over his three-year stint. The South African batter scored 438 runs last season, 730 runs in 2023, and 468 runs in 2022. Delhi Capitals acquired him at his base price of ₹2 crore during last year’s mega auction. The 39-year-old brings valuable experience, having played 145 IPL matches and scored 4,571 runs at an average of 35.99, with a strike rate of 136.36 and 37 half-centuries.
Delhi Capitals remain one of the IPL teams yet to win a title. They will begin their IPL 2025 campaign against the Lucknow Super Giants on Monday, March 24.
