Lucknow Super Giants, asked to bat first, struggled early with both in-form batters Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran dismissed quickly. Mitchell Marsh (30) and Rishabh Pant (63) steadied the ship with a 50-run partnership for the third wicket. Ayush Badoni (22) and Pant combined for 32 runs for the fourth wicket, while Abdul Samad (20) helped lift the innings as Lucknow posted 166 for seven.
Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers for Chennai, taking two wickets.
In response, Chennai Super Kings started strongly with debutant Shaik Rasheed (27) and Rachin Ravindra (37) attacking the Lucknow bowlers. The opening partnership of 52 runs was followed by a quick collapse, leaving Chennai at 111 for five.
