Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene praised Rohit Sharma for his match-winning performance against Chennai Super Kings in their IPL 2025 clash at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Rohit, who had struggled for form throughout the season, returned to his best with an unbeaten 76 off 45 balls. His knock powered MI to a comfortable victory and earned him the Player of the Match award. In the dressing room celebration, Jayawardene honoured Rohit with a special medal and called him a “maverick” for his impactful innings.

“At the huddle, Polly asked for something special and you guys delivered,” said Jayawardene. “I have been through that myself. When you are playing cricket, you go through a rough patch and have to dig deep. There are demons in your head. But Ro, brilliant. Maverick. Well played.”

Rohit’s knock came at a crucial moment when Mumbai Indians needed it most. His aggressive start set the tone for the chase of 177 runs. He shared a 63-run opening stand with Ryan Rickelton before partnering with Suryakumar Yadav in an unbroken 113-run partnership. Yadav contributed with a blistering 68 off 30 balls.

Rohit dominated the powerplay, taking on CSK's Khaleel Ahmed and Jamie Overton. His ability to play both pace and spin effectively was key to MI’s chase. The team achieved the target in just 15.2 overs, securing their third consecutive victory of the season. Despite Rohit’s recent form, the Mumbai Indians management continued to back him.

Mumbai Indians will look to build on this victory as they face SunRisers Hyderabad in their next IPL 2025 match on Wednesday, April 23, in Hyderabad.
