Batting first, Afghanistan posted 325/7, led by opener Ibrahim Zadran’s record-breaking 177 off 146 balls. Azmatullah Omarzai then starred with the ball, taking 5/58 to counter England’s Joe Root, who scored 120. Afghanistan held their nerve in the final overs to secure a thrilling win. The win at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday kept Afghanistan in the race for the semifinals and eliminated England from the tournament.

Afghanistan remains in contention for a semifinal berth after their win over England. Their final group-stage match against Australia is scheduled for February 28 at Gaddafi Stadium. A victory over Australia, along with an England win over South Africa, would secure Afghanistan’s place in the final four.
