Veteran Mumbai cricketer Padmakar Shivalkar, one of India's finest left-arm spinners in domestic cricket, passed away on Monday at the age of 84.

He began his First-Class career in the 1961-62 season as a 21-year-old and played until 1987-88. In 124 matches, he claimed 589 wickets, including 42 five-wicket hauls and 13 10-wicket hauls. His performance in the 1972-73 Ranji Trophy final, where he took 8 for 16 and 5 for 18 against Tamil Nadu, helped Mumbai secure their 15th consecutive title.

Despite his outstanding record in domestic cricket, Shivalkar never played for India. He was also honoured with the CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 by the Indian cricket board.

Mumbai Cricket Association president Ajinkya Naik paid tribute to Shivalkar, calling him a true legend whose contribution to the game will always be remembered.

"Mumbai cricket has lost a true legend today. Padmakar Shivalkar Sir's contribution to the game, especially as one of the finest spinners of all time, will always be remembered," said Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Ajinkya Naik.  "His dedication, skill, and impact on Mumbai cricket are unparalleled. His passing is an irreplaceable loss to the cricketing fraternity. May his soul rest in peace," he added.
