The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has decided to rename a street in honor of former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin.  According to the Times of India, the GCC has selected Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street in West Mambalam, where Ashwin currently resides, for the renaming. The decision was made during a council meeting led by Mayor R. Priya for Budget 2025. An official renaming ceremony is expected to be scheduled soon.

According to reports, the proposal was put forward by Carrom Ball Event and Marketing Company Private Limited, a firm owned by Ashwin himself.

This tribute places Ashwin among other sporting legends like PR Sreejesh and Anil Kumble, who also have streets named after them in their hometowns.

A native of Chennai, Ashwin has enjoyed a remarkable cricketing career. He has taken 765 wickets across formats, including 537 in Tests, making him India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format. He also scored over 3,500 international runs, including six centuries.

Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Dec. 18, 2024. The star spinner made the announcement during a post-match press conference. Though retired from international cricket, Ashwin will feature in the 2025 Indian Premier League for Chennai Super Kings

Over his career, Ashwin played 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is for India. His contributions have cemented his legacy as India’s most successful off-spinner.
