Rohit Sharma was greeted by an overwhelming crowd of fans at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport as he returned home after leading India to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Videos from the airport show fans chanting and cheering as the skipper made his way through the crowd.  He was escorted by Mumbai police from the airport to his car before heading home. 

Sharma’s victory as captain in the Champions Trophy adds to his list of achievements. He became the first and only skipper to lead a team to the finals of all major ICC tournaments. He had previously captained India to the finals of the 2023 World Test Championship, 2023 ODI World Cup, and 2024 T20 World Cup. His leadership also resulted in India clinching the 2024 T20 World Cup and now the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Speaking after the win, Sharma expressed his gratitude to the fans for their support. "I want to appreciate everyone who came out and supported us. The crowd here has been magnificent, it is not our home ground but they made it our home ground. The number of people that came here to watch us play and to get that result in the end was very very satisfying,” he said.

He also praised India’s spinners, including Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel, for their excellent performances throughout the tournament. "Our spinners in particular, there’s too much expectation when you are playing on a pitch like that, but they never disappointed. We used their strengths to our advantage and played some really good cricket," he added.

The players returned home separately the following day. Each member of the squad is expected to spend time with their families before preparing for the Indian Premier League.

Unlike last year’s T20 World Cup win, which saw an open-bus parade and a felicitation ceremony, there will be no large-scale celebrations for the Champions Trophy victory. The lack of time between the tournament and the IPL season is the primary reason.

With the IPL set to begin soon, the players are focused on recovery and preparation. Every member of the Champions Trophy-winning squad has an IPL contract and will report to their respective franchises in the coming days.

Rohit played a crucial role in India’s four-wicket win over New Zealand in the final. The skipper scored 76 off 83 balls, anchoring the innings with seven fours and three sixes. He formed a 105-run opening stand with Shubman Gill in 18.4 overs, setting the foundation for India’s chase.

Although he had an inconsistent tournament with the bat, Rohit delivered when it mattered most. His aggressive approach in the powerplay gave India an early advantage in the final.

Rohit will next be seen in IPL 2025, where he will play for Mumbai Indians. The five-time champions retained him for ₹16.30 crore ahead of the mega auction. However, allrounder Hardik Pandya will lead MI in the upcoming season.

With the Champions Trophy victory secured, Indian players will now turn their attention to the two-month-long IPL season.
