Veteran Saurashtra batter Sheldon Jackson announced his retirement from professional cricket on Tuesday, concluding a 15-year career. His final match was the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Gujarat, where Saurashtra faced defeat.

Jackson, 38, leaves the game with more than 7,200 runs in 105 first-class matches. He scored 21 centuries and 39 half-centuries, with a highest score of 186. His first-class batting average stood at over 45, highlighting his consistency.

A dependable batsman, Jackson also contributed as a fielder and occasional wicketkeeper in limited-overs cricket. In first-class matches, he rarely kept wickets due to the presence of regular gloveman Sagar Jogiyani.

In his final outing, Jackson scored 14 and 27 as Gujarat won by an innings and 98 runs. His domestic career began in December 2011 after three years on the fringes of Saurashtra’s selection. He made an immediate impact in the 2012-13 Ranji season, scoring four fifties and three centuries. His back-to-back hundreds in the quarterfinal and semifinal helped Saurashtra reach their first Ranji final.

His performances earned him a place in the India A squad for the West Indies A series at home. He was also a key player in Saurashtra’s 2015-16 Ranji Trophy campaign.

Last month, Jackson retired from limited-overs cricket after scoring 2,792 runs in 84 innings. His highest score in List A matches was an unbeaten 133 in the 2022 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He registered nine centuries and 14 half-centuries in white-ball cricket.
