Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been discharged from Evercare Hospital in Dhaka after suffering a severe heart attack during a domestic cricket match. The 36-year-old collapsed on Monday while leading Mohammedan Sporting Club in a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League fixture. He experienced acute chest discomfort and was rushed to a hospital, where doctors performed a stent placement surgery the same day. He was later transferred to a larger facility for further observation.

"After monitoring his condition, we have decided to discharge him today," Dr. Shahabuddin Talukder told reporters on Friday. "However, he must follow a strict rehabilitation program and make lifestyle changes to aid his recovery." According to media reports, Bangladesh health ministry official Abu Zafar confirmed that Tamim will be sidelined from cricket for at least three months. "If everything progresses well, he can return after that period," Zafar said. He also stressed the need for Tamim to quit smoking, citing it as a known risk factor for heart attacks. "He must stay away from it and strictly follow medical advice," Zafar added.

Who is Tamim Iqbal?

Tamim, widely regarded as one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricketers, is the country’s highest run-scorer in ODIs and second in Tests. Across all formats, he has scored 15,192 runs in 387 matches, trailing only Mushfiqur Rahim by 110 runs. In ODIs, Tamim amassed 8,357 runs in 243 matches, including 14 centuries. His Test record stands at 5,134 runs in 70 matches with 10 centuries, while in T20Is he scored 1,758 runs in 78 games.

The left-handed opener made his international debut in 2007, just before that year’s World Cup. He gained attention with a crucial half-century against India in Bangladesh’s shock victory. Tamim captained Bangladesh in 37 ODIs and one Test before retiring earlier this year. His last T20I appearance came in 2020, while his final ODI and Test matches were in 2023.

In 2023, Tamim briefly retired from international cricket but reversed his decision after a meeting with then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. However, he was left out of Bangladesh’s squad for the 2023 World Cup in India.
