He took nine wickets in five matches, reinforcing his status as a crucial bowler. After a standout performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Shami was sidelined for over a year due to an ankle injury that required surgery. His last major appearance before the Champions Trophy was in the 2023 World Cup final, where he finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker despite India’s loss to Australia. Shami returned to action earlier this year during the Test series against England. His strong comeback earned him a place in India’s Champions Trophy squad, and he played a vital role in securing the title.

India’s path to the final included a dominant win over New Zealand in the group stage on March 2. In that match, India posted 249 for nine after early struggles. Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel steadied the innings, while Hardik Pandya provided late momentum. Matt Henry starred for New Zealand with five wickets.  The Kiwis started their chase well but faltered as India’s spinners took control. Kane Williamson fought hard with 81 runs but fell to Axar Patel in the 41st over. Varun Chakravarthy was the game-changer with a five-wicket haul as New Zealand was bowled out for 205.
