The Punjab Kings leg-spinner and Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal agreed to pay Rs 4.75 crore in alimony to his estranged wife, Dhanashree Verma, after the Bombay High Court ruling on Wednesday, March 19. The ruling waived the mandatory 6-month cooling-off period for both and allowed the mutual divorce formalities.
The High Court also directed the family court to complete the proceedings of the divorce decree by Thursday due to Punjab Kings’ baller commitments for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). The court ordered the compliance settlement of Rs 4.75 crore alimony agreement after their 2.5-year separation.

The bench comprising Justice Madhav Jamda directed the family court to expedite the divorce proceedings and issue a decree by Thursday, considering Chahal’s upcoming participation in the IPL 2025. The court noted that Chahal and Verma had been living in different settlements and had separated for over 2.5 years. The couple also reached a mutual settlement, including terms related to alimony payments, which was found to be in compliance.
Under Section 13B(2) of the Hindu Marriage Act, couples seeking a mutual divorce must wait six months after filing their petition to explore reconciliation options. However, a 2017 Supreme Court ruling allows courts to waive this period if there is no possibility of reunion.
Chahal and Verma got married in December 2020 and separated in June 2022. Within two years, they had jointly filed for divorce on February 5, 2024, requesting a waiver of the cooling-off period. However, the family court rejected their plea on February 20, citing only partial compliance with the settlement agreement.
