BCCI to face losses worth INR 40 billion if IPL 2020 gets cancelled

The Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) is set to be among the worst hit, especially if the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 is called off.

Scheduled to start on March 29, the IPL season 13 has been suspended twice in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Though there hopes of the event taking place sometime this year, there's the threat of it being called off entirely too.

As per the BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal, an absence of IPL altogether could lead to a loss in the excess of half a billion US Dollars for the Indian cricket.

"The BCCI is looking at a big revenue loss. In case the IPL does not take place, the loss would be close to 40 billion rupees ($530 million), or even more," said Dhumal.

"We are not sure whether we will be able to have it this year. We will only be able to figure out the exact revenue loss once we are sure of how many games we have lost.”

Cost-cutting has become a reality for cricket boards all across the globe. While Cricket Australia even laid off staff, the England Cricket Board gave its players pay cuts due to a lengthy non-cricketing period. As for the BCCI, no such payouts are planned as of now but it will all depend on how the Coronavirus situation develops in the country. India's next international cricketing assignment is the tour of Sri Lanka but considering how things are at the moment, it remains incredibly difficult that the series will take place as scheduled.
