Washington DC [US], March 27 : Michael Caine, who played the role of Alfred in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, recalled the surprising transformation of late actor Heath Ledger for his iconic villainous character 'Joker', saying that he was terrified when he saw the actor for the first time in action on the sets, reported Variety.

In his memoir, 'Don't Look Back, You'll Trip Over: My Guide to Life", Caine admitted that Ledger's performance not only shocked him but also boosted the entire cast to give their best, as stated by NME Magazine and quoted by Variety.

"The smeared makeup, the weird hair, the strange voice. It was chilling. Absolutely floored me the first time I saw him in action - I was terrified." wrote Caine in his memoir as quoted by Variety.

Ledger's performance forced the rest of the cast to "raise our game," Caine added. Ledger's turn as the Joker is regarded as one of the greatest villain performances in movie history.

He posthumously won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Ledger passed away in January 2008 at the age of 28, just a few months before the July theatrical release of 'The Dark Knight'.

The 'Batman' actor also expressed his sorrow for Ledger's early demise in his memoir. He hailed the actor's legacy and wrote that Ledger will always be remembered as a great actor.

"Heath was only 28 when he passed away. I hadn't even made 'Zulu' when I was that age. You think of what he might have gone on to achieve, it's just heartbreaking. We were all terribly shocked, and it made doing the publicity for 'The Dark Knight' that summer much more intense, because all the journalists wanted to talk about his death,"

He continued, "It still makes me sad to think of it... [it's] a performance for the ages. Even though his career was cut short so soon, he'll be remembered as a great actor, I believe." as quoted by NME Magazine and reported by Variety.

According to the outlet, Caine went on to reprise his role of Alfred in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises. The actor has frequently appeared in Christopher Nolan's films, starting with Batman Begins and starring in hits such as The Prestige, Inception, Tenet, and Interstellar. Caine also makes a voice appearance in Dunkirk.

Caine was last seen in the film 'The Great Escaper', which also starred late actress Glenda May Jackson in the lead role.
