Three years ago, India’s finest filmmaker, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, created the masterpiece Gangubai Kathiawadi, featuring Alia Bhatt in the titular role. The film not only brought an untold story to life but also powerfully portrayed the struggles, resilience, and strength of sex workers and those forced into prostitution. This inspiring tale shattered box office records and achieved massive success, with every element—from the songs and story to the characters and setting—receiving immense appreciation. As the film marks its third anniversary today, Bhansali, in a recent interview, revealed the inspiration behind the project, shedding light on the journey that led to its creation.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali revealed how the character and what she went through inspired her to make the film, saying, “What I liked about the character was that she was a very bruised, scarred woman, wronged by society and by the people she trusted. But she was a warrior.” Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada. Starring Alia Bhatt in the lead role, the film also featured Ajay Devgn, Vijay Raaz, and Shantanu Maheshwari. It was a massive success, grossing over ₹209 crore worldwide and was the film that restored faith amongst audiences post pandemic with earning 10.5 crs on its first day. The film received widespread acclaim and numerous awards, including five Filmfare Awards, with Alia Bhatt winning Best Actress. It was also nominated at the BAFTA Awards, solidifying its impact as a cinematic masterpiece.
