More than 150 seafarers, who had disembarked off various ships at the Mumbai port reached Goa on Friday, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Friday.

The 154 seafarers are currently in the process of being screened and quarantined in government-appointed facilities.

"Today, 154 Goan seafarers have been brought to Goa by road directly after signing off at Mumbai Port. Our Govt is working continuously in coordination with central depts to ensure that Goans stranded in different parts of the country & world reach home safely," Sawant tweeted.

More than 30,000 seafarers of the Goan origin are expected to return to the state from different ships and ports-of-call across the world over the next few months.

Earlier this week, more than 60 seafarers who had disembarked off in the international cruise liner Marella Discovery, have been sent to home quarantine after spending a mandatory 14-day period in a private hotel, identified by the state government as an institutional quarantine facility.

One seafarer who had tested negative for Covid-19 in Mumbai and had spent 14 days in quarantine in the metropolis, tested positive for the dreaded virus, when he arrived in Goa on Thursday.

Goa currently has eight active Covid-19 cases.
