Kyiv [Ukraine], October 6 : Ukrainian air defence forces destroyed more than 50 Shahed drones launched by Russia last night, targeting multiple regions including Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kyiv, and Kharkiv, among others, according to a post by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on X.

The drone attacks were part of a broader campaign of aerial strikes that has plagued Ukraine, with the President reiterating the need for enhanced long-range defence capabilities from Ukraine's international allies.

In his post, Zelenskyy emphasised the urgency of halting these daily aerial assaults.

"Last night, Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed more than 50 "Shaheds" in the Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kyiv, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Chernihiv, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, Zaporizhzhia, Zhytomyr, and Kharkiv regions. Over the course of this week, the enemy has used about 20 missiles of various types, more than 800 guided aerial bombs, and nearly 400 strike UAVs of various types. This daily aerial terror can be stopped. This requires unity among our partners and long-range capabilities, which will help save Ukrainian lives every day. At next week's Ramstein meeting, we will continue working on this with our partners," he stated in the post.

Russia's relentless air attacks have caused significant damage across Ukraine. On Sunday, a Russian strike targeted residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia, injuring 14 civilians. Zelenskyy condemned the attack, describing the bombings of ordinary homes and infrastructure as yet another example of Russia's "daily terror."

The attacks have also intensified in other regions, including Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Sumy, where guided bombs have damaged residential buildings, energy infrastructure, and medical facilities.

Zelenskyy's post also shed light on the broader scale of Russia's offensive. Over the past week, Russia has deployed around 20 missiles, more than 800 guided aerial bombs, and nearly 400 strike drones.

This barrage of airstrikes has strained Ukraine's defence systems, underscoring the urgent need for stronger air defences and continued international support. Zelenskyy urged for more air defence systems and long-range weaponry to help protect civilians from these relentless assaults.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict, which escalated in February 2022 with Russia's full-scale invasion, has resulted in thousands of civilian deaths. Moscow continues to deny intentionally targeting civilians, despite widespread international condemnation and evidence of airstrikes on residential areas.

Attacks have become a near-daily occurrence, especially in Ukraine's eastern and southern regions. Russia has frequently employed a range of weaponry, including guided aerial bombs, missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), to target Ukraine's cities and critical infrastructure.

In response, Ukraine has ramped up its defence efforts with help from Western allies. Yet, the volume and intensity of Russia's assaults have made it clear that more sophisticated and long-range defence capabilities are necessary. As Zelenskyy highlighted in his post, the Ramstein meeting coming up in the following week will focus on securing more support for Ukraine's defence against Russia's ongoing aerial terror.
