Did Imran really wear designer clothes in US?

A controversy has erupted about the clothes that Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan wore in the US during his recent trip. A media report claimed that Imran's wife Bushra Bibi got these stitched from a local tailor, but a claim by a luxury designer store has complicated the situation, media reports said.

During the meeting with US President Donald Trump and later with an American delegation, Imran wore traditional Pakistani 'salwar-kameez' and his favourite 'peshawari' slippers.

People close to Imran have claimed that these clothes were stiched by a local tailor who took a "nominal charge". But Islamabad-based luxury clothes store 'Mohtaram' has claimed it stitched seven sets of 'salwar-kameez' for the Prime Minister. This designer store is considered upmarket.

A single set of 'salwar-kameez' set at 'Mohtaram' can cost at least (Pakistani) Rs 16,000. A jacket to go with the set wouuld cost even more.

It remained unclear if the Prime Minister really wore 'Mohtaram' dress. Chief Executive Officer of the store Fahad Saif declined to make any comment.

Another luxury store 'Lafabrica' claimed to have made a waistcoat for the Prime Minister. But store, too, declined to comment.

Prime Minister's Special Secretary for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resources Affairs, Zulfi Bukhari, has rejected all these claims. He said: "Prime Minister's wife Bushra bought these clothes personally and got them stitched from a local tailor who doesn't charge much".

"The PM has never been interested in designer dresses, especially for his simple salwar-kameez. The First Lady bought all the clothes and got them stitched from a local tailor. If a designer is trying to claim credit for them, he is not only a liar but a cheat," Bukhari tweeted.
