Sheikh Hasina Resigns: BSF on High Alert Along India-Bangladesh Border Amid Political Turmoil in Bangladesh
In response to escalating violence and political instability in Bangladesh, the Border Security Force (BSF) has issued a high alert across the entire 4,096 km India-Bangladesh border. This decision comes as a precautionary measure following recent developments in the neighboring country, including the resignation of Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. BSF DG (acting) Daljit Singh Chawdhary, senior officials has reached Kolkata to review India-Bangladesh border security: Officials
The political climate in Bangladesh has been fraught with tension in recent weeks. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been a prominent figure in Bangladeshi politics, has stepped down amidst growing unrest. Her resignation has triggered widespread protests and clashes, exacerbating the already volatile situation. The departure of Hasina, who has led the country for over a decade, has left a power vacuum and increased uncertainty about the nation’s future. In light of these developments, the BSF has taken decisive action to ensure border security and prevent any potential spillover of violence into India. The high alert status will involve increased surveillance, heightened patrols, and strict monitoring of the border areas. The BSF has also been instructed to maintain close coordination with local law enforcement agencies and intelligence units to swiftly address any emerging threats.
At least 101 people, including 14 policemen, were killed in clashes on Sunday, leading Bengali-language newspaper Prothom Alo reported. The violence forced authorities to cut off mobile internet and enforce a nationwide curfew for an indefinite period. At least six people were killed during clashes between police and protesters in Jatrabari and Dhaka Medical College areas, The Daily Star newspaper said. Some students from various educational institutions gathered at Dhaka Central Shaheed Minar before and after 10 am to participate in the 'March to Dhaka' programme, prompting the police to fire tear gas shells to disperse them.
