Viral picture of six dead giraffes shows Kenya's drought horror

The impact of Kenya's drought on the country's giraffe population is captured in heart-wrenching pictures. A picture has gone viral on social media, in which six giraffes are lying dead inside Sabuli Wildlife Conservancy in Wajir. The photo was reportedly taken after vulnerable giraffes died from lack of food and water when they got "stuck in the mud while trying to drink water from a nearby dry reservoir."

Their bodies were taken to a different place where the picture was taken. The bodies were shifted to another place to avoid contamination of the water of the reservoir.

As per Al Jazeera, much of the north of Kenya has received less than 30 percent of normal rainfall since September, causing severe drought in the region. The lack of rainfall has had an impact on the region's wildlife and has led to shortage of food and water.

But Ibrahim Ali, a resident of the Bour-Algi giraffe sanctuary said, farming activities along the river have prevented the giraffes from accessing the water, making the situation worse. 

The Star reports that 4,000 giraffes in adjacent Garissa County are at risk of extinction due to the drought.
