At least 1,000 protesters gathered Friday night in Oakland at a demonstration billed on social media as a rally to condemn the brutal murder of George Floyd, an African-American man from Minnesota. Protesters have stormed I-880 in Oakland, with all lanes being blocked. Video showed hundreds of protesters on the busy freeway. The group blocked traffic for a half hour or so before moving back to city streets. There were no reports of injuries, even after protesters were seen darting between vehicles in traffic. Oakland police have also reported large groups of protesters in the area between the 700 and 1400 block of Broadway.
The death has triggered widespread attention across the globe with several international celebrities demanding justice for George Flyod. For the unversed, George Floyd was brutally murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Monday, May 25, 2020. The video of this whole incident is now being circulated over social media. In the video, a police officer is seen kneeling and putting all his body weight on George Floyd’s neck. George Floyd’s pleas resonated across the street as onlookers heard him scream "I can't breathe" and after a while, he went motionless under the officer still kneeling on his neck.
