This annual celebration honors the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the revered Maratha warrior king whose legacy continues to inspire generations.

When is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti?

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, also known as Shiv Jayanti, will be celebrated on February 19, 2025, as per the Gregorian calendar. However, according to the Hindu Samvat calendar, the occasion falls on March 17, 2025.

This year marks the 395th birth anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is celebrated with great pride and enthusiasm in Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka. 

Maharashtra marks the occasion with grand processions, cultural performances, and tribute ceremonies. Schools and educational institutions conduct lectures and exhibitions highlighting Shivaji Maharaj’s achievements. Devotees visit forts, monuments, and temples associated with his legacy, offering prayers and participating in community events.

Shiv Jayanti Significance: 

Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was the first one to commence the event of Shivaji Jayanti in 1870 after he found the grave of Shivaji Maharaj in Raigad (1869), about 100 miles from Pune. The celebrations were later carried forward by Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1894.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj encouraged the use of regional languages such as Marathi and Sanskrit in his court and administration above the standard language of the day, Persian. Shivaji Maharaj is also famously known as the "Father of the Indian Navy" because of his role in the development of the naval wing of the Indian army during the Middle Ages.
