DY Chandrachud on Pune Rape Case, says 'Laws Alone Cannot Stop Such Crimes' (Watch Video)

A young woman was raped at Pune's Swargate bus station on Wednesday, raising serious concerns about women's safety in the state. The opposition parties have criticized the ruling grand alliance government following the incident. The police have announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for information that leads to the capture of the suspect, who is currently on the run. Former Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud remarked that while legal reforms were introduced after the Nirbhaya case, new laws alone cannot stop such crimes. He stressed the importance of effective law enforcement, thorough investigations, and prompt justice.

This incident has increased pressure on the government, with opposition leaders comparing it to the 2012 Delhi Nirbhaya case. The police have set up special teams to locate the suspect, Dattatreya Ramdas Gade (37), and are actively seeking tips on his whereabouts.

The victim reported that the assault took place at the MSRTC depot, the largest bus station in the city, around 5:45 am on Tuesday. The attacker lured her by suggesting that the bus to Phaltan was on a different platform, then led her to an empty Shivshahi AC bus where he assaulted her before escaping.

The police are currently reviewing CCTV footage, and MSRTC is evaluating its security measures. The investigation is moving quickly based on the victim's statement, raising significant concerns about women's safety and increasing calls for immediate action from both the government and the police.

In response to the rising number of female passengers, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has ordered an increase in female security personnel at the bus station. He has also set a deadline of April 15 to address the issue of unregistered buses operating in the area and has called for the appointment of an IPS officer to fill the vacant Chief Security and Vigilance Officer position. A proposal for this appointment will be submitted to the Home Department soon.
