Sangli, Maharashtra (February 22, 2025): A 36-year-old man from the Khanbhag area has died from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). This is the first reported fatality in the district. He was admitted to a private hospital last week after experiencing muscle weakness. His condition worsened, and he was later shifted to Civil Hospital, where he died on Friday.
GBS cases have been reported in several parts of the country. Pune has seen a rise in infections. Two patients from outside the district died in Miraj while receiving treatment. Sangli has also recorded cases in Chintamaninagar, Vishrambag, and Sanjaynagar since late January.
The patient from Khanbhag developed symptoms on February 14. He was first admitted to a private hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was moved to Civil Hospital on February 19. Despite intensive care, he did not survive.
Following the death, the Sangli Municipal Corporation’s health department has launched a survey in affected areas. Officials have urged citizens to seek immediate medical attention if they notice symptoms. Municipal health officer Dr. Vaibhav Patil has asked private hospitals to report GBS cases to government authorities.
