‘I Want Freedom’: 22-Year-Old Student Dies by Suicide After Jumping From 3rd Floor of College Building in Maharashtra’s Solapur

Solapur, Maharashtra (March 18, 2025): A 22-year-old student at D.B.F. Dayanand College in Solapur died by suicide on Monday evening after jumping from the third floor of a new building in campus. The incident came to light around 4:20 p.m. The deceased has been identified as Pritam Nilesh Raut, a first-year M.Com student and resident of Tilak Chowk in Solapur.

According to police, Pritam had left home that morning, telling his mother he was going to submit an assignment at college. When his phone remained switched off for hours, his worried parents began searching for him. They first checked at his workplace — a computer center near Savarkar Maidan — but learned he had not shown up. Eventually, they visited the college, where they were informed that someone had fallen from the new building. On reaching the scene, they discovered it was their son.

A note found near Pritam read, "I want freedom." In the note, he took full responsibility for his actions and apologized to his parents, relatives, and friends. He also requested that any debts he owed be repaid. Police Inspector Suhas Chavan confirmed the contents of the note.

Pritam is survived by his parents and his twin brother, Pratik, who is a third-year B.A. student. His father, Nilesh, works as a peon at Vikas Bank, while his mother is a homemaker.

Family members later revealed that Pritam had misled them about his income. He claimed to earn ₹13,000 a month at the computer center, though his actual salary was only ₹5,000. Concerned that his son was struggling financially, Nilesh had given him ₹13,000 monthly for three months.

The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
