“Kunal Kamra Will Get Police Protection In Mumbai,” Says Khar Police Official

Mumbai Police said that Stand-up comic Kunal Kamra will be given police protection once he reaches Mumbai. Mumbai police made this statement as the comedian got many threats from Shiv Sena leaders, especially from Shiv Sena office-bearer Rahool Kanal. Senior Inspector at Khar Police Station, Sanjeev Dhumal, said, “Since Kamra is an accused in a case that is registered at Khar Police Station, we will have to provide him protection,” reported Free Press Journal. Many FIRs were registered against Kunal Kamra for his traitor remark. Mumbai Police issued a third summons to Kunal Kamra and asked him to appear before them on April 5. Kamra did not show up for the previous two summons, citing that he had prior commitments and could only show up on/after April 2. Mumbai Police is asking him to appear for clarification over his disparaging remarks against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in his latest stand-up video, "Naya Bharat", on YouTube.

Rahool Kanal, speaking with media officials on Monday, said, “When Kamra comes to Mumbai, we will give him a Shiv Sena-style welcome.”

Four FIRs have been filed against Kamra, the Khar Police said that all four will be treated as one. It will be treated as one since the place of the alleged offence, the witnesses, and the sections are the same. The police official Dhumal said, “For us, this is a case, and we treat it as one even though several cases have been filed.”

The Madras High Court has granted interim bail to Kunal Kamra, and hence, he is not expected in Mumbai before April 7. The police issued a summons to the audience members of his show, the manager, the hotel staff, and technicians. Police said that they witnessed the recording live and hence they are taking thier statements in this case. They got notices that comply with Section 179 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which gives police the authority to call witnesses for interrogation.

Kamra called Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde a "traitor" and said that he had "stolen someone's father" in his Naya Bharat show. He also mentioned well-known politicians, businessmen, and government organisations. The case was moved to Khar when Kamra was the subject of a zero FIR filed at the MIDC police station on March 24. Shiv Sena (Shinde) MLA Murji Patel, who represents the Andheri (East) constituency, made a complaint that served as the basis for the FIR.
