Maharashtra: 26-year-old teacher dies after getting stuck in school lift

A 26-year-old teacher died after getting stuck in the lift of a school building in Mumbai on Friday afternoon. The incident took place between 1 and 2 pm at St Mary’s English School near Chinchli signal on the SV road in Malad West of Mumbai. The deceased teacher has been identified as Jinal Fernandez. She had joined the school in June this year as an assistant teacher. As per a report in The Indian Express, the incident occurred when Jinal Fernandez was on her way to the staff room after finishing a class on the sixth floor of the school building. 

When she entered the lift on the sixth floor, the lift suddenly started moving upwards while her one leg was stuck inside the lift and her body outside. She received grievous injuries, said, eyewitnesses.Hearing her cries for help, school staff and children rushed to help her but failed. Later, police and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot after being alerted about the incident and pulled Fernandes out. She was then rushed to Lifeline multi-specialty hospital but was declared brought dead. Police said that they will record the statements of the school staff, management, and the company that looks after the maintenance of the lift.
