Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Reviews Nagpur Communal Violence, Vows Strict Action Against Rioters

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis chaired a high-level meeting with senior police officials on Saturday to assess the recent communal unrest in Nagpur, which was sparked by the controversy surrounding the Aurangzeb tomb. After the meeting, Fadnavis addressed the media, emphasizing that those responsible for the violence would face strict consequences, including financial recovery for damages. He also hinted at the use of bulldozers if necessary to enforce recovery.

The disturbances, which erupted on March 17, followed rumors regarding the desecration of a "chadar" with sacred inscriptions during a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) protest. The situation escalated into stone-pelting and arson, leading to significant public unrest.

Fadnavis explained that a replica of Aurangzeb’s grave had been set on fire earlier in the day, prompting a police report. Subsequently, rumors spread that a Quran verse was written on it, leading to a violent mob attack. The police swiftly intervened and have already arrested 104 individuals, with more expected to be taken into custody. He assured that those involved in the violence, including those inciting riots online, would be prosecuted. In addition, 68 inflammatory social media posts have been identified and deleted.

The Chief Minister stressed that the rioters would be held financially accountable for the destruction caused, stating, "Any damage will be recovered from the rioters, and if they refuse to pay, their properties will be sold to recover the costs. Bulldozers will be used if necessary." He further clarified that it was premature to speculate on any external involvement in the violence, assuring the public that investigations were ongoing. On Friday, Nagpur police made additional arrests, including that of Hamid Engineer, the working president of the Minorities Democratic Party, bringing the total number of arrests to 105.
