Maharashtra GBS Outbreak: Death Toll Reaches 17 After Two More Fatalities

Two more people have died in Maharashtra from Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), bringing the state's death toll to 17. With the most recent deaths, the total number of GBS deaths in India has now reached 21.

The Times of India reports that the fatalities were reported in Nagpur and Pune on February 17. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh each reported one fatality.

It has been confirmed that a three-year-old child in Jalgaon has GBS. The toddler has been admitted to the Government Medical College's paediatrics department's intensive care unit (ICU). A blood test revealed that the child's illness was "GBS" after they had been complaining of leg pain for a few days.

Three patients have been infected with GBS in the Jalgaon so far; one of the female patients has been released from the hospital, and the other two—a man and a three-year-old child—are currently receiving treatment.

On the other hand, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) gave permission to reopen thirty previously closed Reverse Osmosis (RO) facilities in an effort to resolve the persistent concerns regarding drinking water quality in GBS-affected districts. These plants, which are situated in areas where GBS cases have been detected, are now able to reopen after fulfilling particular quality assurance requirements set forth by the civic organisation.

Along with a public notice outlining the requirements for the reopening, the PMC made this decision public on February 17. Among the requirements are that operators of RO plants register their facilities with PMC, perform comprehensive maintenance, and permit inspections of the plants to make sure they adhere to safety regulations.
