Maharashtra Government To Unveil New Parking Policy In Mumbai and Pune to Ease Traffic Congestion

Cities like Mumbai, Thane, and Pune that are facing traffic congestion issues will be relieved as Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis led government is working on a new Parking Policy. CM Fadnavis made this announcement during the Bhumi Pujan ceremony of the state transport department’s headquarters in Worli. He also highlighted the need for mapping parking slots and developing a software or an application that guides motorists about available spaces and how they can rent the parking spot.

With this, the government aims to utilise the available public parking space, as some parking spots remain unused.

This initiative is part of a 100-day transformation drive. It also follows the December 2024 proposal about the certified parking area certificate for purchasing vehicles. The transport authorities have said that renting the spot for parking purposes through the app would be considered valid for requirement, though plans are still conceptual.

In cities like Mumbai, where the traffic congestion is the biggest issue faced by commuters daily, this initiative can solve their problem. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is also developing an 'Automatic Parking Guidance and Management System.' This will enable a digital payment mechanism that will enhance the parking system throughout the city. For this digitization mechanism, over 3,000 parking spots have been examined and will allow real-time updates about parking availability and enable advance booking of spots.
