Nagpur Violence Was ‘Well-Planned’, Attacks on Police Won’t Be Tolerated: CM Devendra Fadnavis

Following a peaceful morning in Nagpur, the city was rocked by violence in the evening, revealing signs of a deliberate attack. Stockpiled stones, weapon seizures, incidents of arson, and targeted property damage all pointed to premeditation. Addressing the Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis underscored the orchestrated nature of the unrest.

The violence erupted in the Mahal area after a clash between two youth groups over the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. What began as a minor altercation quickly escalated into a large-scale street disturbance. Anti-social elements set fires and hurled stones at police officers, forcing law enforcement to respond with a lathicharge. In the ensuing chaos, fifteen officers sustained injuries, and several youths were detained in late-night raids.

Providing a detailed account to the Assembly, CM Fadnavis confirmed that five cases were registered three at the Ganeshpeth Police Station and two under process at Tehsil Police Station. In response to the escalating violence, curfews were enforced in 11 police station jurisdictions, with entry blockades set up in Tehsil, Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, and other key areas. Additionally, five teams from the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) were deployed to restore order.

The riots resulted in extensive property damage, including the burning of a crane, two JCB machines, and multiple four-wheeled vehicles. A total of 33 police personnel were injured, including three Deputy Commissioners one of whom was attacked with an axe. Five civilians were also wounded; while three were treated and discharged, two remain hospitalized, with one in critical condition in the ICU.

Chief Minister Fadnavis made it clear that attacks on law enforcement would not be tolerated, stating firmly, “Whoever attacks the police will not be spared. Maintaining law and order in Maharashtra is a collective responsibility. With ongoing religious festivals, I urge everyone to show restraint and work towards preserving peace.”
