Chhagan Bhujbal, a leader from the NCP party, has expressed deep worry about the sharp drop in onion prices. He pointed out that farmers, especially those in Nashik (Maharashtra's top onion-producing area), are facing severe financial problems.
Bhujbal said that onion prices have fallen a lot. He emphasized that Nashik produces the most onions in India, and Lasalgaon is the main center for onion trading. He added that farmers are suffering greatly, with some even considering suicide because of their financial losses.
The significant decrease in onion prices means farmers are struggling to even cover the costs of growing them, leading to widespread financial difficulty. The Lasalgaon APMC (Asia's largest onion market) has seen a dramatic fall in prices, leaving farmers with much lower earnings than they anticipated.
