Three months ago, a gang targeted the residence of a retired government official in Navi Mumbai, where they ransacked the property and stole cash and valuable items worth almost Rs 35 lakh. Recently, the police have apprehended the leader of this criminal group.

Posing as Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials, six persons had barged into the complainant’s home at Airoli on July 21 this year.
The gang carried out a “search” and walked away with cash and valuables worth Rs 34.85 lakh. They also allegedly threatened to kill the wife of the complainant, who earlier worked with the Public Works Department (PWD), if they resisted, the official said.

Following a complaint from the victim, the Rabale police registered a case for dacoity, criminal intimidation, personating a public servant and cheating under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to Senior Inspector Rajendra Kamble from the Virar police station, the Navi Mumbai police had previously arrested 11 individuals in connection with the crime, and they were actively searching for the mastermind, identified as Amit Varik, who is 35 years old.

Recently, the Navi Mumbai police received information indicating that Varik was located in Chandansar of Virar. Working in collaboration with the Virar police, they successfully apprehended Varik on October 22, as confirmed by the official.
