Praful Patel Responds To Criticism For Placing Shivaji Maharaj's 'Jiretop' on PM Modi's Head, Says 'Will Not Happen Again'
Ajit Pawar-led NCP's MP Praful Patel on Wednesday addressed the controversy that erupted after he placed the Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's 'Jiretop' on Prime Minister Modi's head. Patel emphasised that he had no intention of disrespecting the revered figure.
The 'Jiretop' is a unique cone-shaped headgear with a turha, traditionally worn by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In recent practices, it is presented to someone rather than being placed directly on their head to show respect. Patel's action deviated from this custom, sparking criticism. Facing backlash from Maratha organisations and opposition leaders, Patel posted on his X handle, promising to avoid such actions in the future.
"Founder of Hindavi Swaraj, Yugapurush Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is our idol and inspiration. We are determined to follow his ideals and path of public welfare. Nothing that would insult Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj can ever come to my mind. We will take due care in future," Patel stated.
This clarification came ahead of PM Modi's visit to Maharashtra on Wednesday, where he is set to address a rally in Nashik and lead a roadshow in Mumbai. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP is part of the Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP and Shiv Sena.

Congress state chief Nana Patole had criticised Patel and the BJP, accusing them of insulting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and demanding an immediate apology. Patole warned that the Marathi community would respond strongly to such consistent insults to the Maratha warrior king.
NCP (SCP) had also condemned the act, calling it an insult to Shivaji Maharaj and accusing the ruling alliance of tarnishing Maharashtra's image. "The proud people of Maharashtra will teach a befitting lesson to the BJP which has insulted Maharashtra," the Sharad Pawar-led party declared.
