India celebrates Navratri, a vibrant nine-day festival honoring the nine forms of Goddess Durga, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The term "Navratri" derives from "Nava," meaning nine, and "Ratri," meaning night. This festival not only features lively Garbha events but also offers the chance to explore the stunning Durga Pandals across Mumbai. Here are five notable Durga Pandals to visit in the city.
Indian Bangla Club, Andheri
One of the most anticipated events is the Indian Bangla Club's Sarbojanik Durga Puja, also known as the D.N. Nagar Puja. This year, the celebration will take place at a new venue, Chitrakoot Ground in Andheri West, from October 9 to 13, 2024. Highlights include a heartfelt tribute to the late Adesh Shrivastava by his wife, Vijayata Pandit, and their son, Avitesh Shrivastava. The emotional evening will feature performances by Bappi Lahiri's grandson, Rego, and renowned singer Priya Malik, among other talented artists.
Bombay Durgabari Samiti
As one of Mumbai’s oldest Durga Pandals, the Bombay Durgabari Samiti is celebrating its 94th year. The intricately crafted idol of Goddess Durga is created by artisans from Kolkata. This pandal blends traditional rituals with modern practices, attracting visitors each year.
The Bengal Club, Shivaji Park, Dadar West
The Bengal Club has hosted Durga Puja since 1922 on its expansive grounds in Shivaji Park. Visitors can explore various stalls offering delicious food, stylish accessories, and West Bengali artifacts. Last year, the eco-friendly idol of Goddess Durga was crafted using non-toxic, water-soluble materials. Traditional rituals are performed in the mornings, followed by evening events like conch-blowing and Dhunuchi dance competitions.
Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja Samiti, Juhu
Known as "Mukherjee Durga Puja," the North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja has a rich history dating back to 1948 when it was initiated by Padma Shri Shashadhar Mukerji. This celebration attracts numerous celebrities, including Rani Mukherjee, Kajol, and Amitabh Bachchan, making it a star-studded affair.
Mumbaichi Mauli
Mumbaichi Mauli is celebrated annually with a grand procession, with this year's Aagman occurring on September 29, 2024. Devotees joyously welcomed the Devi, and while several pandals are located in the Pratiksha Nagar area during Navratri, Mumbaichi Mauli is distinguished by its significant history and extravagant decor. It remains one of Mumbai's oldest and most beloved pandals.
