BMC Unveils ₹3,955 Crore Education Budget for 2025-26
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a ₹3,955 crore education budget for the financial year 2025-26. As part of its efforts to enhance learning opportunities, the civic body has proposed the establishment of a STEM Robotics Laboratory in BMC schools. This initiative aims to foster students' interest in science and technology while improving their analytical and creative thinking skills. A budget allocation of ₹10 crore has been designated for this project.
Budget Allocation and Expenditure
For 2024-25, the Education Budget Estimates stood at ₹3,167.63 crore. This has increased to ₹3,544.34 crore for 2025-26.
The Capital Expenditure Budget for 2024-25 was originally ₹330.19 crore, later revised to ₹331.91 crore. For 2025-26, the proposed capital expenditure is ₹411.30 crore.
BMC-Run Schools and Student Enrollment
Currently, 21 BMC-run schools operate under various educational boards:
- CBSE: 18 schools
- ICSE, IGCSE, and IB: 1 school each
A total of 11,736 students (6,279 boys and 5,457 girls) are enrolled from nursery to Std. 10.
Infrastructure Upgrades and Construction
Repairs and Upgradation
BMC owns 479 school buildings, and ongoing efforts are being made to improve their infrastructure:
- 66 repair and upgradation projects are currently in progress.
- Of these, 40 projects will be completed by March 2025, while the remaining 26 projects will be completed in the following financial year.
Reconstruction and New Construction
- 15 projects (initiated in 2023-24 and 2024-25) are currently in progress.
- 5 projects will be completed by March 2025, with the remaining 10 projects set for completion in the next financial year.
In total, 45 projects (repairs, upgradation, reconstruction, and new construction) will be completed by March 2025, while 36 projects will continue into the next fiscal year.
