According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), at least 15 ‘Govindas’ sustained injuries in as many incidents during Dahi Handi celebrations as part of the Krishna Janmashtami festival in Mumbai on Tuesday, August 27. The injured are being treated at hospitals and are stable.
By noon, BMC had received reports of injured Govindas from the government, BMC and private hospitals. A total of 15 Govindas were reported injured, and their treatment is currently underway in the OPD.
Nair Hospital and Poddar Hospitals have received at least 4 cases of injuries each, the highest number of cases received by any other hospital for injuries related to the Dahi Handi festival. Meanwhile, Sion Hospital has two cases of injuries. Other medical facilities, such as Rajawadi Hospital, MT Agrawal Hospital, Kurla Bhabha Hospital, and St. George Hospital have received one case of injury each.
Last year, during the Dahi Handi celebrations, as many as 195 Govindas were injured in different incidents while celebrating Dahi Handi. Last year the BMC reported that out of the 195 Govindas. 18 were admitted to the hospital while the remaining 177 were discharged.
During the festival, Govindas or Dahi Handi participants form multi-tiered human pyramids to break 'dahi handis' (earthen pots filled with curd) hung in the air. The festival is being celebrated across the city.
