The regional department in Mumbai of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow warning for February 25 (Wednesday) and 26 (Thursday) as a heatwave is likely in Mumbai and nearby areas, including Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri. The Maharashtra's capital recorded 38 degrees Celsius on Monday, February 24, a five-year high for the month. In 2020, the city hit 38.4 degrees Celsius on February 28, 2020, and this is the first heatwave warning of the year.
"A yellow warning has been issued for heat wave in Mumbai and nearby areas for today and tomorrow as the highest temperatures are expected to reach upto 37-38 degrees Celcius, which is nearly 5 degrees Celcius above normal temperature for the month of February," said IMD Mumbai.

Mumbai's Santacruz observatory recorded 39.6 degrees Celsius on February 25, 1966. This was the city's all-time high temperature, 6.4 degrees Celsius above normal, reported the Times of India. The Colaba centre recorded 36.8 degrees, 6.2 degrees above normal. A heatwave warning was also issued for Thane and Raigad.
The IMD, in its latest forecast, said that the day temperatures are likely to be 37 degrees and 22 degrees for the next 24 hours in the city and surrounding areas. According to the weather experts, delayed in the delayed sea breeze was causing the heat.
