Mumbai: 2,700 Buildings Served Notices for Fire Safety Violations

Mumbai, Maharashtra (March 8, 2025):  The Mumbai Fire Brigade has issued notices to around 2,700 housing societies for failing to comply with fire safety regulations. Action has been taken against 64 buildings, and legal cases have been registered, according to Deputy Chief Fire Officer Anil Parab.

Fire safety systems in high-rise and residential buildings must be maintained and operational as per regulations. Housing societies and commercial establishments are required to submit a compliance certificate, known as "Form B," on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) website. Licensed agencies must inspect fire safety equipment and provide this certificate twice a year, in January and July. Many societies and establishments have been found neglecting this requirement.

Actions Taken for Violations

If a fire safety system is found non-functional, the fire department gives a 120-day period to make it operational. Failure to comply results in actions such as cutting off electricity and water supply. Legal proceedings are then initiated against the housing societies or establishments.

Fire Safety Inspections in Buildings

The inspection process includes checking fire extinguishers, hydrants, and sprinkler systems to ensure they are in working condition. Fire officials also verify if fire safety regulations are being followed. If violations are found, the building owner is served a notice, and a legal report is submitted to the municipal corporation.

Over the past year, thousands of buildings across Mumbai and its suburbs have been inspected. Notices have been issued to 2,700 buildings, while 64 have faced legal action, Parab said.
