In a tragic road accident near the Orange Gate ramp on the Eastern Freeway, two people lost their lives while four others sustained serious injuries. Following the incident, Sewree Police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the car driver.
According to police, the accident occurred around 5 am on Monday, 14th April 2025. As per information received from the South Control Room, a white Eco car rammed into a divider near the Orange Gate on the Eastern Freeway. The impact was so severe that all six passengers, including the driver, were critically injured.
The injured were immediately rushed to JJ Hospital with the help of an ambulance and the Sewri Mobile Police team. However, doctors declared two of the victims Vinod Rama Wayde (52) and Anita Ramji Jaiswar (60) dead before arrival. The remaining four injured victims are currently undergoing treatment at JJ Hospital.
One of the injured, Khushboo Ramnayan Rajbhar (21), a teacher at Kalwa Hindi High School, told police in her statement that she, along with her mother Geeta Rajbhar and companions Vinod Wayde, Anita Jaiswar, Sulekha Wayde, and the driver Chetan Nandu Patil, had left their residence at Waghoba Nagar, Kalwa around 4 am on Monday to purchase fish from Bhaucha Dhakka, Mumbai.
Khushboo further stated that driver Chetan Nandu Patil was driving the Eco car at a dangerously high speed. Despite repeated warnings from Khushboo to drive carefully, the driver allegedly ignored her advice. As a result of losing control of the vehicle near the Orange Gate ramp, the car collided with the divider, leading to the deaths of Vinod Wayde and Anita Jaiswar, while Khushboo, her mother Geeta Rajbhar, Sulekha Wayde, and the driver himself were seriously injured.
Based on the victim's complaint, Shivdi Police have registered a case against driver Chetan Nandu Patil under sections 281 and 105 of the Indian Penal Code and section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Post-mortem examinations were conducted on the deceased, and the bodies were handed over to their families. A forensic team was also called to the accident site to collect evidence. The driver and other injured victims are still receiving treatment at JJ Hospital. According to DCP Mohit Kumar Garg, further legal action will be taken against the accused driver once he is discharged from the hospital.
