Mumbai, Maharashtra (March 1, 2025):  Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will lay the foundation stone for the new headquarters of the state’s transport department, ‘Parivahan Bhavan,’ on March 2 at 2 p.m. in Mumbai. Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar will be present at the event, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said.

The Transport Department was established on March 1, 1940, in the then Bombay State to regulate road transport. Since then, March 1 has been observed as ‘Transport Day.’ To mark this occasion, the foundation ceremony for the four-story ‘Parivahan Bhavan’ will take place at Sir Pochkhanwala Road in Worli.

The new building will cover 12,800 square meters and will include a four-level underground parking facility with space for 150 four-wheelers. The construction is expected to be completed in two and a half years.

Despite generating an annual revenue of ₹15,000 crore for the state, the transport department has never had its own headquarters. Since its establishment 85 years ago, the department has operated from a rented building. After taking charge as transport minister, Sarnaik proposed the plan for a dedicated headquarters in the department’s first meeting.

Now, the long-awaited project will be officially launched on Sunday by the chief minister.
