In a move set to significantly improve Mumbai’s suburban connectivity, the Central Railway (CR) is preparing to reclaim a crucial 300-500 metre railway stretch linking Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) to Vidyavihar station on the Main Line. According to a Hindustan Times report, this long-awaited development promises to provide a more seamless rail route to LTT, bypassing the current dependence on road access via Tilak Nagar station on the Harbour Line. At present, commuters heading to LTT must alight at Tilak Nagar and undertake a walk to the terminus, often after switching trains at Kurla — a process that is both time-consuming and inconvenient. The proposed reconnection of this short but critical link will allow suburban passengers direct access to LTT from the Main Line, potentially transforming travel for thousands of daily commuters.
This strategic move aligns with Central Railway's broader efforts to upgrade infrastructure at high-traffic terminals. Last year, LTT’s capacity was expanded with the addition of two new lines and platforms, reflecting its growing importance in Mumbai’s rail network. Currently, LTT handles a substantial volume of traffic, including 40-45% of summer special trains. Passenger associations such as the Mumbai Yatri Parishad have been vocal in demanding better connectivity to LTT, drawing comparisons to the more commuter-friendly Bandra Terminus, which is seamlessly linked to Khar station via a foot-over-bridge. By reclaiming and restoring this track segment, CR is not only addressing long-standing commuter concerns but also taking a vital step toward decongesting Mumbai’s overburdened transit system. If executed efficiently, this project could mark a major win for suburban railway users across the city.
