The Mumbai Police have registered a case against unidentified cyber fraudsters for allegedly duping vehicle owners by creating fake links for High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) registration. Officials provided this information on Thursday.
An official stated that the incident came to light when an Assistant Transport Commissioner approached the South Region Cyber Police Station on Wednesday with a complaint against unknown cyber fraudsters. Earlier, the Maharashtra Transport Department had made it mandatory for vehicles registered before April 2019 to install HSRP by April 30, 2025. As per the Supreme Court’s directive, HSRP is essential to curb vehicle-related crimes.
Following this directive, the process of replacing number plates has begun in the state. The official added that the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has provided a registration link on the Transport Department’s website to facilitate vehicle owners in getting HSRP.
He further mentioned, "The RTO has appointed three vendors for this task – Rosmerta Safety Systems Ltd., Real Mazon India Ltd., and FTA HSRP Solutions Ltd. Among them, Rosmerta and Real Mazon reported to the RTO that some cyber fraudsters had created fake links for HSRP registration."
These fraudsters allegedly used these fake links to extort money from vehicle owners under the pretext of HSRP installation, the official said. "Considering the seriousness of the matter, RTO officials approached Mumbai Police, leading to a case being registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act) against unidentified individuals for fraud."
The investigation into the matter is currently underway.
