On April 3, Mumbai Police announced its decision to register criminal cases against those who are caught driving while intoxicated. They took this decision as Mumbai saw a spike in the number of drunk driving cases over the past few years. Last year, there were 1356 intoxicated drivers who received penalties between January and March; in 2025, that number increased by 60% to 2264. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumbhare issued a notification regarding this announcement.

The intoxicated driver's license will be revoked, and his car will be seized during the registration process. Kumbhare said, given the increase in cases, the Mumbai Police's traffic wing has decided to prosecute drunk drivers at the local police station under section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for putting other people's lives or personal safety in danger, in addition to the Motor Vehicles Act.
