An incident of attempted fraud under the pretext of educational assistance has come to light in Andheri, where an unidentified individual tried to deceive people using the name of local BJP MLA Amit Satam. Following the complaint, the Juhu Police have registered a case under cheating and relevant sections of the IT Act and have launched a search for the unidentified accused.
Amit Satam, the sitting BJP MLA from Andheri West Assembly Constituency, resides in the Lallubhai Shyamlal Road area of Andheri. His office, located in the same locality, is a regular address for residents seeking help and resolving civic issues. On Thursday, April 17, Satam received a phone call from his acquaintance, Chaitanya Naik, alerting him to the fraudulent attempt.
According to Naik, he had received a WhatsApp message from an unknown person who introduced himself as "Sehgal" and claimed to be speaking from Amit Satam's office. The accused later shared the details of a bank account and contacted Naik again, requesting an amount of Rs 25,862, claiming it was intended as financial assistance for educational purposes.
Sensing something suspicious, Naik directly contacted MLA Amit Satam for confirmation. Upon inquiry, Satam clarified that no person named "Sehgal" worked in his office, nor was he familiar with anyone by that name. It then became clear that the accused had tried to impersonate Satam's office to swindle money under the false pretense of charity.
Soon after the incident came to light, MLA Amit Satam approached Juhu Police and filed an official complaint against the unknown person for attempting to commit fraud using his name. Based on Satam’s complaint, the Juhu Police have registered an FIR under sections of cheating along with provisions of the Information Technology Act, and further investigation is underway to identify and nab the accused.
